Blogging for reputation, it really works

I have written before about how blogging can be a useful way to build reputation as an expert, and through that reputation build business. Recently I came across a concrete example that shows how this can work in the real world.

Right now I’m not in the market for the services of technology lawyer, but it’s not inconceivable that I may be one day, and quite likely the first lawyer I’d contact would be Rob Hyndman. I have never met or spoken to Rob, so that’s not where this respect comes from. I do like his website, but that’s not what brought him to my attention, it was his blog that did that.

On Rob’s blog he does just what I would advocate for many business people, especially those providing services. He writes regularly and knowledgeably about subjects which his potential clients find interesting. I read Rob’s blog because I find the posts interesting, not because I’m looking for any lawyerly services right now. But, if and when there does come a time when I need those services then I’ll contact him because of the credibility and prominence that he has built in my mind, through his blog posts. That’s how blogging is supposed to work, and the more I work on this the more convinced I am that this is how it does work.

Thanks for the mention!

When I started blogging it was because I had something to say about subjects that interest me, but I very quickly realized that my blog was the most important marketing decision I had made for my practice.

I write about topics that grab my attention, and hope that the impression I create is one of authenticity and expertise. I like to think that readers will get a truer sense of who I am and what it would be like to work with me through the blog than they would through just about any other type of marketing communication. And so far, it’s working.
