At the recent TorCamp ‘unconference’ I joined a group discussing RSS and how it works in marketing. One of the questions was ‘why is RSS better that email newsletters?’. My immediate reaction was ‘it just is’, but that’s not a terribly well reasoned opinion so I thought I would give that question some further thought.

When I was first thinking about starting up Hogtown Consulting I spoke to lots and lots of people to get all the advice that I could. One piece among many that I remember was on what makes clients want to recommend you, or not, ‘assuming you do a decent job they will recommend you if you were enjoyable to work with, if you weren’t they won’t’. That struck me as a bit shallow at the time I think.

Last weekend I attended TorCamp, an ‘unconference’ for geeks. It was a great experience, and I got to speak to lots of super interesting people. I had a short conversation with John Lam who mentioned a blog post on the metaphor of the intercontinental railroad for where software and web development is going now, it’s long but worth a read.
