What is a blog, or blogging 101
The term blog is a contraction of weblog, not that weblog is much more descriptive. A blog is simply a type of website, the definitions of what exactly a blog is vary, but there are some features which are common across most blogs.
- A blog is a web site, typically made up of short text pieces, sometimes including photos or illustrations.
- These individual pieces, blog posts, are displayed in reverse chronological order (newest at the top of the page).
- Publishing to a blog is usually a very simple and quick process, which encourages frequent and informal updates.
- Blogs typically include the option for visitors to leave comments which become part of the blog. This means blogs can create two-way conversation in a sense that traditional web sites don’t.
- Linking and quoting web pages outside the blog itself are common. A typical blog entry aggregates what is useful and interesting on a topic, rather than re-inventing the wheel.
There are many different types of blogs, from personal diaries to corporate blogs. In a small business context blogs can be a good way communicate effectively and easily with your target audience.
